Cry Me A RIver

Madeley’s a wanker, Campbell had direct power in conspiring to kill a million plus people and remains unrepentant (ht2 Harpy). There is no way in which Campbell is acting out of good faith, he was instrumental in concocting the media lies to move us into war. Why the media waste our time giving these lying scum air time is a lesson in who the media consider worthy of their and our attention and as they were also part of the process they keep returning to this apologia for their own shortcomings, to convince themselves they are not such risible hacks. A plague on both their houses.

‘Sir’ John Scarlett’s Cavalcade of Whimsical ‘Facts’

All guaranteed to be presented not-under-oath!

  • JFK was a suicide.

  • Alastair Campbell won’t come in your mouth.
  • Simon Cowell makes a great contribution to music.
  • Don’t worry I’ll pay you back next week.
  • Saddam Hussein parachuted out of the first plane (which he piloted) to hit the WTC then was smuggled back to Iraq by to oversee the building of atom bombs coated with anthrax by Elvis (or Mohamed Islam, as he is now known, Osama Bin Laden’s right hand man).
  • I just can’t believe it’s not butter.
  • It is entirely coincidental that on the afternoon David Kelly died he amended his will to leave his priceless Subbuteo collection to me.
  • Rod Liddle is an intelligent witty writer, a leading anti-racism activist and not a beater of pregnant partners.
  • Miss Scarlett in the Cluedo board game was my mum.
  • Only 100,00 people died in the Iraq war, just like only a few hundred thousand Jews, Socialists, LGBT people, Romany died in the Holocaust, all the rest are hiding in secret enclaves funded by a shadowy international conspiracy funded by aliens, human rights activists and lefties keen to smear war and genocide as some kind of a bad thing.
  • No one ridicules my freakishly deformed slaphead behind my back.
  • Tony Blair is bit like Jesus really.

Restraint

Certainly The Guardian has shortcomings but it is only fair to give credit where credit is due. Allegra Stratton managed to interview James Purnell while he tried to sound deep, thoughtful, caring and ensure a continuing high profile career (d’you think he’s signed to Portillo’s agents?), without ever once breaking down and repeatedly punching him very hard in his lying smug face. So well done Allegra!

PS. Amount Purnell thinks people can live on while being harassed to find jobs that do not exist- £64.30 (over 25 mind, young un’s get by on 50 quid)

Amount he claimed in just one expenses receipt… for fridge magnets- £250, overall expenses claim average of £1,506 a month (in addition to Ministerial salary of £64,766, and as a Cabinet Minister with entitlements he did get £144,520).

Why Even Fucking Bother, Gordon?

And Chilcot, for fuck’s sake. Why not just have it chaired by Whitey McWhitewash. In a concrete box. At the bottom of the ocean. At least it will waste less of our money on further obscuring New Labour’s war crimes that way. Of course I know why you’re bothering, it is to rewrite history, sort of the British equivalent of the GW Bush Presidential library but with less literary merit (Chilcot will find a way to make that possible!). Oh fuck off Gordon, are you actually on the Elect Cameron committee? Go on, you are aren’t you? Can’t wait to see a NL cheerleader gold plate this steaming pile of shite.

Gordon Brown, the British prime minister, has been accused of staging a cover-up after he ruled that an inquiry into the UK’s involvement in the US-led invasion of Iraq would be held in private. He also said it would would take a year to complete – taking it beyond the date the prime minister must hold a general election.

The investigation will be chaired by Sir John Chilcot, 70, a former permanent under-secretary of state at the Northern Ireland Office. Chilcot has been chairman of Britain’s Police Federation since 2001 and sat on the Butler inquiry, which reported into the intelligence which the UK government had about Iraq and weapons of mass destruction.

Brown, who cited national security issue for not holding the investigation in public, said: “The primary objective of the committee will be to identify lessons learned.

“The committee will not set out to apportion blame or consider issues of civil or criminal liability.

“It [the inquiry] will consider the period from summer 2001 before military operations began in March 2003 and our subsequent involvement in Iraq right until the end of July this year.”

Crusaders

Open the gates that the righteous nation may enter, The nation that keeps faith.” [The quote appears over an image of tanks entering an Iraqi city]

In a lengthy article on Donald Rumsfeld’s rocky tenure as Defense Secretary, GQ published never-before-seen cover sheets from top-secret intelligence briefings produced by Rumsfeld’s Pentagon. Starting in the days surrounding the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the cover sheets featured inspirational Bible verses printed over military images, “and were delivered by Rumsfeld himself to the White House” to the president, “who referred to America’s war on terror as a ‘crusade,’” GQ writes.

Criminal Regrets Getting Caught

Trust the Washington Post to allow a war criminal to begin his defence in the public sphere with ‘friends’ speaking for him (some anonymous! Ooh those hard hitting hacks, they don’t even get the man to speak and let the quotes come from anonymous ‘friends’). What is clear from the end though is- Bybee took the OLC gig, wrote what was needed of him, signed off on what was wanted of him to get the job he wanted as a judge. So he committed war crimes in the name of his career, what a guy. An absolute copy of Hannah Arendt’s observations of Eichmann except this time a US paper is propagating the coward’s pathetic rationalisations. Or.. read his anonymous friends telling how he loves kittens, sunrises, God and is full of regret (or something my eyes glazed over after a while)…now he might lose his job (or heaven forfend get prosecuted). He’s a smart and corrupt lawyer, this is the opening of his defence and the WaPo is shill enough to cooperate, as ever. I would expect a lot more of these humanising the torturer elite pieces over the next few years, after all they’ve already parlayed the ‘Support the troops’ patrio-imperio-porn (with a healthy unexamined side of racism) into feeling sorry for the agents who actually did the torture.

Purnell- The Cowardly Bully

New Labour are now desperately trying to deny their loan shark proposals even though Purnell’s signature is on them, best of all though is it has shown what a cowardly bully he is, first he proposes ripping off the most desperate people then when found out he hides and pushes a junior minister in front of the media to lie about his scam. People who want to ‘engage’ with New Labour on the privatisation and dismantling of welfare (brand name- Reform, the third or so since they came to power, incremental’s the way to do things dictated by the Church of the Free Market in a ‘democracy’) need to understand this is the people they look to lay down with, cowards and spiteful bullies who see human beings purely in financial terms. Capitalist sociopathy if you will.

Hilariously the former DWP scumbag Hutton praised the proposals, clearly still feeling the sting of his hatred for his poor & working class mother. That this isn’t the end of Purnell’s career tells you how thoroughly corrupted New Labour are.

Utter Scum, Loan Shark Purnell

WP ate my post apparently, not happy, unless it pops up again, in its absence see HarpyMarx for the Loan Shark disgrace.

Sociopath

(AFP) — George W. Bush hopes history will see him as a president who liberated millions of Iraqis and Afghans, who worked towards peace and who never sold his soul for political ends.

“I’d like to be a president (known) as somebody who liberated 50 million people and helped achieve peace,” Bush said in excerpts of a recent interview released by the White House Friday.

“I would like to be a person remembered as a person who, first and foremost, did not sell his soul in order to accommodate the political process. I came to Washington with a set of values, and I’m leaving with the same set of values.”

Family Values

A violent rapist with a “one-second fuse” who fathered 19 children with his two daughters during a reign of domestic terror lasting a quarter of a century was ordered yesterday to spend the rest of his life in jail by a judge who described the case as the most shocking he had ever heard.

The court heard how the powerfully built father was a tyrannical bully who drank heavily and called himself the “main gaffer”. He considered himself to be a “hard man”, the court heard, with a “Jekyll and Hyde personality”, who threatened to kill his children if they disobeyed him.

A cheap shot? Well the people who bang on about family values are not worth much more, the mother and two daughters would be 3 sets of single parents in time, the horror! They’d need benefits to survive and they’d need healthcare to recover from the ordeal, scroungers! And while this isn’t going on behind every door, insisting -families staying together is best- means sweeping domestic abuse under the rug, daddy knows best. The predictable attack on social services may in part be justified (though anyone who’s enthusiastically embraced neoliberal policies of cutting welfare and social services needs to shut the fuck up and accept their part of the blame, you know who you are selfishness fans) but first, let all us men think about how we treat the women in our lives and ensure we are allies to them not oppressors.

Formula Blair, The *Smoking* Gun

Via Blairwatch. What I think is important about this is if at that time (1997) the country had understood how dishonest he was he could not have pulled off the Iraq war lies. And of course the standard trick is again repeated here, the truth will trickle out, but make sure it takes years and you can get away with it, whereas if the full facts were known at the time, not such an easy ride. It is repeated now over Iraq, but it’s always too late once the damage is done, they know that, so lie and lie again to achieve your objective knowing full well the personal consequences to them will only catch up years later (if at all). With every cover up is the opportunity to lie again another day and that impunity paved the way for lies that grew until Blair committed the enormity of the the war crime against Iraq.

The documents – released to The Sunday Telegraph after a two-and-a-half year Freedom of Information battle – reveal that Mr Blair personally intervened to secure Formula One’s exemption from the tobacco advertising ban just hours after meeting Bernie Ecclestone, the motorsport’s billionaire boss. The Government has always maintained that the meeting with Mr Ecclestone, a major new Labour donor at the time, did not influence the final decision to offer the exemption. However the previously secret papers show that Mr Blair did order ministers to find ways to implement the “derogation” for Formula One after the meeting.

The revelation casts doubt on the version of events given by officials both to Parliament and to lobby journalists when the sleaze scandal first broke in 1997. The documents also show that civil servants believed draft statements on the affair, which were about to be made public, were “disingenuous”.

The Ecclestone Affair was New Labour’s first major scandal and a test of Mr Blair’s leadership and his claim to be cleaning up British politics after John Major’s government. As the affair deepened with the revelation that Mr Ecclestone had donated £1 million to the Labour Party just months before the tobacco advertising climbdown Mr Blair faced calls to resign. The Prime Minister appeared on the BBC’s On The Record Programme to defend the exemption and to insist he was “a pretty straight sort of guy.”

At the time the Government insisted that the decision to exempt Formula One was not decided by Mr Blair following his meeting with Mr Ecclestone on 16 October 1997. They insisted it was a joint decision made with the Department of Health at a later date. However, the newly released documents prove conclusively that Mr Blair ordered his Government to prepare for the policy change immediately following his meeting with Mr Ecclestone – a fact which was not revealed at the time of the scandal.

Within hours of the meeting, the Prime Minister had instructed his Chief of Staff, Jonathan Powell, to inform Tessa Jowell, then the public health minister, of his decision. The following day, Ms Jowell was informed in writing by Downing Street that: “The Prime Minister would like your ministers to look for ways of finding a permanent derogation for sport in particular, F1.”

Secret Summary Executions Under Maliki’s Reign

Meet the new boss…One of the men responsible for this state of affairs, Alistair Campbell, is now back in the NuLabour fold.

The Independent has learnt that secret executions are being carried out in the prisons run by Nouri al-Maliki’s “democratic” government.

The hangings are carried out regularly – from a wooden gallows in a small, cramped cell – in Saddam Hussein’s old intelligence headquarters at Kazimiyah. There is no public record of these killings in what is now called Baghdad’s “high-security detention facility” but most of the victims – there have been hundreds since America introduced “democracy” to Iraq – are said to be insurgents, given the same summary justice they mete out to their own captives.

“There’s a cell with a bar below the ceiling with a rope over it and a bench on which the victim stands with his hands tied,” a former British official, told me last week. “I’ve been in the cell, though it was always empty. But not long before I visited, they’d taken this guy there to hang him. They made him stand on the bench, put the rope round his neck and pushed him off. But he jumped on to the floor. He could stand up. So they shortened the length of the rope and got him back on the bench and pushed him off again. It didn’t work. They started digging into the floor beneath the bench so that the guy would drop far enough to snap his neck,” the official said. “They dug up the tiles and the cement underneath. But that didn’t work. He could still stand up when they pushed him off the bench. So they just took him to a corner of the cell and shot him in the head.”

Still, it will be making Death Squad Negroponte feel at home as he firms up the colonial charter. As will the ‘fusion cells’ 3,500+ kills (which Bob Woodward so admires)-

Paul Woodward:- “The programme – which Woodward compares to the World War II era Manhattan Project that developed the atomic bomb – must remain secret for now or it would ‘get people killed,’ Woodward said Monday on CNN’s Larry King Live.

” ‘It is a wonderful example of American ingenuity solving a problem in war, as we often have,’ Woodward said.

“In The War Within: Secret White House History 2006-2008, Woodward disclosed the existence of secret operational capabilities [‘fusion cells’] developed by the military to locate, target and kill leaders of al Qa’eda in Iraq and other insurgent leaders.”

The Washington Post reported: “Headquartered in an old concrete hangar on the Balad Air Base, which once housed Saddam Hussein’s fighter aircraft, about 45 miles north of Baghdad, the Joint Task Force in Iraq runs fusion cells in the north, west and south and in Baghdad, US officials said.

“The headquarters bustles like the New York Stock Exchange, with long-haired computer experts working alongside wizened intelligence agents and crisply clad military officers, say officials who have worked there or visited.

“Huge computer screens hang from the ceiling, displaying aerial surveillance images relayed from Predator, Schweizer and tiny Gnat spycraft. The Bush administration’s 2009 supplementary budget request included $1.3 billion to fund 28 unmanned aircraft, officials said, and all will go to the interagency teams in Iraq and Afghanistan, not the Air Force.

“For the Joint Task Force, the CIA provides intelligence analysts and spycraft with sensors and cameras that can track targets, vehicles or equipment for up to 14 hours. FBI forensic experts dissect data, from cellphone information to the ‘pocket litter’ found on extremists. Treasury officials track funds flowing among extremists and from governments. National Security Agency staffers intercept conversations or computer data, and members of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency use high-tech equipment to pinpoint where suspected extremists are using phones or computers.”

In a separate report on what appears to be the same secret programme, The Sunday Telegraph recently reported that hundreds of terrorist suspects in Iraq have been killed by British special forces.

“More than 3,500 insurgents have been ‘taken off the streets of Baghdad’ by the elite British force in a series of audacious ‘Black Ops’ over the past two years.

“It is understood that while the majority of the terrorists were captured, several hundred, who were mainly members of the organisation known as ‘al-Qa’eda in Iraq’ have been killed by the SAS.

“The SAS is part of a highly secretive unit called ‘Task Force Black’ which also includes Delta Force, the US equivalent of the SAS.”

One of the earliest references to the operation of fusion cells in Iraq says that they came into being during the first year of the war in Iraq.

In their book, Hope is Not a Plan, Thomas S Mowle and Larry Diamond said that the US Army’s chief intelligence officer in Iraq in 2003, Maj Gen Barbara Fast, established “an intelligence fusion cell manned by Americans, British, and Australians… The fusion cell dealt with targeting, counterterrorism, interrogation support, political-military matters, and the insurgency.”

Maj Gen Fast was the most senior military intelligence officer serving in Iraq at the time the Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse occurred. Critics said she and other senior officials should have been held accountable for the abuse. In A Question of Torture, by Alfred W McCoy, she is quoted as having told the commanding officer of the Abu Ghraib prison, “We’re going to run interrogations the way we want them run.”

Empire Negotiating Its Chinese Debt

The Pentagon notified Congress Friday of 6.5 billion dollars in possible arms sales to Taiwan that would include advanced interceptor missiles, Apache attack helicopters and submarine-launched missiles.

But war pimps are maybe hoping for more-

Jim Lobe– Just 15 months after being forced to resign as president of the World Bank over a conflict of interest regarding his professional and personal relationship with his girlfriend, former deputy defense secretary Paul Wolfowitz may be involved in another, far more geostrategic conflict of interest.

It involves his dual roles as chairman of the State Department’s International Security Advisory Board (ISAB) and chairman of the US-Taiwan Business Council. Among the latter’s US members are military contractors who have been dying to get the George W Bush administration’s approval to sell about US$11 billion worth of arms to the island to protect it against the threat of an attack by the mainland.

Kiss of Death

Tony Blair is giving advice to Prime Minister Gordon Brown and has told him how to win the next election, Cherie Blair has said.
