This Is Rape Culture

Absolutely disgusting –Men cleared as rape woman’s group sex fantasy revealed-(ht2 PennyRed) so if a woman has sexual fantasies that means she can’t be raped, which is what this seems to imply. That male prosecutor and judge think a woman having sexual fantasies destroys her credibility? Well we’re all in trouble then, but women far more than men because well- patriarchy. This is a really dangerous outcome for everyone who has sexual fantasies (erm all of us) and those who engage in anything other than the most vanilla -approved by conservative straight men in the legal profession- sex lives (and that doesn’t wash, ask a sex worker about their legal clientele). And if the argument is this the case would be impossible to win in the current legal system, well duh, there’s a big clue there about the failings and need for change in that legal system. But the quotes from the well paid legal men actually do not bear that out, they mostly boil down to –we don’t believe or respect her because she has fantasies– which is just repulsive and hateful, it seems to rest on a judgement and prescription of women that precludes them having a sexual existence of their own, not one pre-approved by men. This is a really offensive judgement and I hope the survivor has help to deal with it and help if she wishes to push for a proper trial in a court not run by misogynist scumbags.

It’s gratifying to notice that a lot of men are reacting to this disgusting judgement. It is par for the course in our legal system so I wasn’t particularly surprised – but a big public uproar would be good!

It’s appalling and indeed an uproar would be good to add to change in the system that rewards people with attitudes like this who work in it.

I think the system would be pretty much empty if people holding these attitudes were to be removed tomorrow.

Sad but probably true, added to that the legal profession closes ranks and protects its own very effectively. Still in theory they are not uneducated or clinically stupid so change is possible (though by that same virtue it makes this all the more egregious).

Do these judges not learn in law school that rape is not sex, even if it uses the same parts? I sure hope they don’t have as much trouble telling a vicious beating apart from a friendly game of cricket…

One could approach their balls with a bat to find out…

What a thoroughly depressing, and regressive, piece of news.

A penchant for rough sex, group sex, any kind of sex, in fantasy alone or in reality, should never be construed as open-ended consent, any more than marriage vows, flirtation across a dance floor or a cheeky email.

No means no, and consent can be withdrawn at any time. Men – just fucking deal with it.

The voice of reason speaks. I don’t need to deal with it. I was never a part of it. Am I the only one who does not swear? Maybe I’m the odd one out in this regard.

Not really regressive though. Decisions like this are made every day. Every so often one is publicised as a warning to women know our place.
