Evo Morales, Word!

Speaking to reporters, Bolivian President Evo Morales blamed state capitalism for the onset of global warming and said the Copenhagen talks should include a focus on determining the climate debt owed by rich nations.

Bolivian President Evo Morales: “Climate change is not a cause, rather an effect. It is a product of the capitalist system, which favors the obtaining of the maximum profit possible. That is the purpose of the capitalist system, without taking into due consideration the lives of others. In Copenhagen, we should enter into a thorough analysis of what countries are the ones that are hurting the environment the most, and we should consider those damages and focus on the countries that bear a major responsibility for the payment of this climate debt, this obligation.”

Yes, I would agree with all of that. But who, in actual fact, is going to pay. It will not be the fat cats who consume the most. I hardly have my heating on as it is which led to a friend of mine commenting that I am `living badly.’ The truth is that if our government decided to pay some sort of compensation then the burden of it will fall on the working poor. Another issue I know but the burden certainly will not fall on the workshy, thats for sure.

Well our inability to hold the ruling class to account should not cost us the planet, that’s why a leftist component of environmentalism is essential or the dynamic you outline will occur. The consumer level of greenism is often little more than distraction to facilitate the elites getting away with business as usual.

Evo has the power to hold corporations operating within Bolivia accountable (and he’s fought them directly in the past), so there, at least, we can expect to see action. Up here in the Northern Hemisphere, where governments are dominated by and beholden to corporate interests? Um, not so much.

I think I want to move to Bolivia.

Sso, how is it that Evo Morales is able to start instituting something like democracy, and we can’t?

Because he actually wants to! Also I would say the national specifics (indigenous, colonial diviisons, land etc) make it possible, the indigenous majority give him a power base the wealthy mob lack and now the torture regimes are not a US priority the people have chance of govt of their choice. And on top of that he really is an amazing guy, rather than a smarmy salesman shilling for corporations a la Blair.
