Janet Street Porter- Still Rubbish Shocker

Short version- when you’re killed by the police be a fine upstanding person so I can properly feel sorry for you, ooh the police have a hard job.

See Pulse for more on her idiotic column on Ian Tomlinson. To me it’s a pretty common thing from people with well paid columns, when you’re of a certain position and income and for long enough you work to see the side of the agents of state violence that protects your position. But what do you expect from someone who produced Network 7? All surface, no feeling.

Rubbish. The Pulse piece was selective in the extreme. Read the whole Janet Street-Porter article and see what she actually said.

I did before formulating my opinion and it stands. It’s a space filling load of old rubbish, he was attacked from behind while moving away from the police, then the police lied about it. It is a killing and an attempted cover up. She could have talked about that and all the other people who were hit by police, the creeping criminalising of protest, instead she waffles to no discernible effect and picks up her cheque. It would be at home in the Daily Mail.

Perhaps JSP cannot write that it is a killing and an attempted cover up in the same way as you can on a blogpost. She did report on how he was treated, and obviously didn’t condone it. There has been a ‘steady drip’ about how he was a no-gooder drunk on the radio this week and she was countering that. It is a short OPINION piece, what do you expect from it – would you prefer she wrote about celebrity pigs on ice in the jungle?

        • RickB Says:

That’s the point, his character does not make the attack any different, but the drip of info does defend the police to many people and yes if you get many hundreds if not thousands to write for a huge audience on such a matter I expect much better than Daily Mail-isms.

If anyone was to do anything about police brutality it would have been done when Jean Charles de Menzes was shot in the head at point blank range in Stockwell Station. That was murder with witnesses who spoke just after on the radio describing how it was murder. Nothing was done.

After that it doesn’t matter a jot what is said about Ian Tomlinson or by whom, I know that, JSP knows that and so does everyone else.

Why is there no direct link on here to the Independent piece?

  3. RickB Says:

earwicga, re De Menezes, we can ‘t stop causing a fuss or else the murders will increase, the extent each one causes problems for the establishment is the extent it acts as a deterrent. Obviously justice is a long shot but at this point putting attention onto this is civic self defence against an authoritarian govt. and the police it deploys.

    • earwicga Says:

So the more media attention the better then?

      • RickB Says:

Well depends on the attention I guess.

        • earwicga Says:

So a fuss should be made, and attention should be put on this case. But not if it is by somebody you dislike. Somebody that is ‘idiotic’.

And if nothing is done about a man being shot in public by our police force then that is the point where they have got away with everything, now and forever.

        • RickB Says:

I dislike her and the piece was rubbish, hence-idiotic.

          Well I hope not forever.
