IRI Rolling Up ‘Spy Networks’

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) – Iran said Saturday it had uncovered spy rings organized by the United States and its Western allies, claiming on state-run television that the espionage networks were made up of “infiltrating elements from the Iraqi occupiers.”
The Intelligence Ministry has “succeeded in identifying and striking blows at several spy networks comprised of infiltrating elements from the Iraqi occupiers in western, southwestern and central Iran,” said the statement, using shorthand for United States and its allies. The broadcast gave no further details.

I fear this means a lot of arrests of reforming elements, in line with the arrest of Jadi’s lecturer.

Big Mouth Ahmadinejad, *That* Quote & All The Rest

Simply the best article EVER! About the misquote of Ahmadinejad regarding Israel and the farcical story behind its infamy. It’s written by an artist and co-fonder of the Mossadegh project Arash Norouz.

“There is no better way to govern Iran than Democracy and Social Justice!” Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh (1882-1967) was a lawyer, professor, author, Governor, Parliament member, Finance Minister, Foreign Minister, and democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran.

Mossadegh fought both internal corruption and British colonialism, enacted social reforms and nationalized the Iranian oil industry. In 1953, he was overthrown by a U.S. funded CIA coup, arrested and tried as a traitor in military tribunal court. It was America’s first successful dismantling of a foreign government, and Iran has not known democracy since.

It’s really worth reading in full but in case you have a very good reason to be in a hurry here is a potted rundown-

Ahmadinejad was quoting, they were not his words-

Ahmadinejad has essentially been credited (or blamed) for a quote that is not only unoriginal, but represents a viewpoint already in place well before he ever took office. “The Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time.”

And who mistranslated it?

The inflammatory “wiped off the map” quote was first disseminated not by Iran’s enemies, but by Iran itself. The Islamic Republic News Agency, Iran’s official propaganda arm, used this phrasing in the English version of some of their news releases

Doh! So everyone ran with it to paint Iran as an enemy that should be attacked, Ahmadinejad didn’t help by avoiding clarifying his position using the infamy to further his career and the war pimps lapped up the misquote-

“Words of Hate: Iran’s Escalating Threats” released by the powerful Israeli lobby group AIPAC opens with the warning, “Ahmadinejad and other top Iranian leaders are issuing increasingly belligerent statements threatening to destroy the United States, Europe and Israel.”

There is also evidence of deliberate altering of another quote a year later by the MSM to stoke the war pyre again-

The quote used in the original AP article and copied in the Jerusalem Post article supposedly derives from the IRNA. If true, this can easily be checked.
There you will discover the actual IRNA quote was:
“As the Soviet Union disappeared, the Zionist regime will also vanish and humanity will be liberated.”
Compare this to the alleged IRNA quote reported by the Associated Press:
“The Zionist regime will be wiped out soon the same way the Soviet Union was, and humanity will achieve freedom.”

Meanwhile the actual leader of Iran says this-

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, that ‘We have no problem with the world. We are not a threat whatsoever to the world, and the world knows it. We will never start a war. We have no intention of going to war with any state.'”

They would rather focus on big shot Ahmadinejad and his big mouth and he loves it! The article finishes with this-

This scenario mirrors the kind of false claims that led to the illegal U.S. invasion of Iraq, a war now widely viewed as a catastrophic mistake. And yet the Bush administration and the compliant corporate media continue to marinate in propaganda and speculation about attacking Iraq’s much larger and more formidable neighbor, Iran. Most of this rests on the unproven assumption that Iran is building nuclear weapons, and the lie that Iran has vowed to physically destroy Israel. Given its scope and potentially disastrous outcome, all this amounts to what is arguably the rumor of the century.

Iran’s president has written two rather philosophical letters to America. In his first letter, he pointed out that “History shows us that oppressive and cruel governments do not survive.” With this statement, Ahmadinejad has also projected the outcome of his own backwards regime, which will likewise “vanish from the page of time.”

But really just go and read it, now!

UN Slaps Down US Anti-Terror Human Rights Abuses

Except you probably didn’t hear that because it was in the Friday (with added holiday weekend) news dump, probably after the US pulled some strings to get it announced when no one would pay an ounce of attention.

TEN PERCENT 1 HAL smallBring the motherfucking noise!

The United States apparently violated international law in its military tribunals by using coercion to extract confessions and writing counter-terrorism laws that restrict immigration on questionable grounds, a U.N. investigator said on Friday.

…reports that information was obtained from terror suspects using “enhanced interrogation techniques” amounted to a form of torture or inhumane treatment that is illegal under international law, particularly the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights treaty the United States signed.

His report said the prisoners detained by the military at Guantanamo had been categorized by the United States as alien “unlawful enemy combatants,” which Scheinin called a “description of convenience” since there is no such category under international law.

They are either combatants to be released at the end of a conflict as prisoners of war, or people who have to be charged with war crimes and prosecuted accordingly, usually in civilian courts, he said. In Guantanamo, he said, even an acquittal by a military commission “does not result in a right of release.”

“This further undermines the principles of fair trial and would, if immediate release was not provided in an individual case, involve an arbitrary detention in contravention” of the treaty, he said.

Scheinin also criticized several U.S. laws, including the 2001 Patriot Act, enacted by Congress after the September 11 attacks on the United States, for expanding the definition of terrorist acts “beyond the bounds of conduct which is truly terrorist,” and tightening immigration restrictions based on the expanded definitions.

Scheinin said his visit supported suspicions that the CIA has flown terrorism suspects from Afghanistan or Iraq to countries where they could face abuse and torture under “extraordinary rendition.”

Stop A Stalker

Update: June 7th the stalker was arrested.

Lady blogger Rachel From North London (more details at link) has been stalked by a woman who is now on the run from police, probably living homeless in London and is in need of psychiatric help. Felicity Jane Lowde is the stalker and appears to have no one who will help her go and get treatment and her illness causes her to harass and threaten others. So while I’m not a big fan of putting ill people into the legal system she is causing harm and needs help.

Age 41 ( appears older). 5’8
Size 16/18 ( overweight for height)
Eyes brown/green with unusual squinting appearance in one eye
Hair mouse/light brown, possibly some grey
She usually uses internet cafes in London, usually between 4pm and 6pm.
Also likely to be found in public libraries and anywhere with cheap or free internet access. She periodically travels to North Oxford, where she lived before the trial.
