Never one to leave hitherto undiscovered shallows alone the Beeb’s own emissary to Washington Justin Webb (nice but dim, actually not even that nice but makes up with extra dimness, bless) latches onto the stupidest right wing scam since Obama won, wingnuts are suggesting his victory means people of colour can no longer claim ‘victimhood’ or racism has aflicted them. Yes, because a black president means all racism has instantly been extinguished throughout American society… The stupidity is breath taking, you expect it of the hateful right but what does it tell us about a BBC hack bringing it up? He’s an idiot? We knew this. He’s a conservative? Well duh! His appreciation of the complexities of race and culture is roughly that of a mouldy brick? Bingo! At least though he posits this foolishness on his BBC ‘blog’ (and yes he does the Fox thing of chucking on a question mark at the end and quotes! -An end to “victimhood”?- y’know he’s just asking, about a quote, he didn’t say it, he’s just saying is all…no need to get upset at his blatant right wing idiocy folks, he’s not a racist, he just disseminates their talking points “victimhood” ). So I say set Hazel Blears on him, what better than having two idiots scrap with each other, you can’t lose.

This started with McCain’s concession speech last night in which he effectively said to any African-Americans listening: ‘OK, now a black guy has made it to president, so what’s your excuse’.
Who thought the problems of America’s poor Blacks could be solved by simply electing a Black president. Better make sure the next one is a Latino.

Hey Mike, nice to have you commenting. Yes now you mention it that’s right McCain did float this meme, I know people thought his speech was graceful but I thought he slipped in a number of nasty things.
Yes if this is how you solve bigotry then all we need a succession of Presidents from oppressed groups, and after Latino, gay, native American, who knew it was so easy? Of course in this scheme what does it make the opposition candidate, a vote for racism? Hmm maybe Justin was subtly saying the GOP are a bunch of Klansmen, maybe I misjudged him.

I dislike the word “victimhood” it shows little understanding or concern about oppression and discrimination.
I mean, take old Justin’s logic….did it mean that when Thatcher was elected then women would be automatically liberated…and oppression would magic away.
It’s just an excuse not to recognise, challenge and fight oppression and discrimination.

Harpy- Yes, Maggie did in fact make all feminism obsolete. The great intellectual Webb has spoken, people are just playing the victim card when in fact white men run things because they are the bestest evah! Hey wait a minute that rather helps white male Mr Webb, gosh I wonder where he gets such self empowering ideas?
Yes I know what you mean about victimhood, or victim it has been slowly associated with ideas of the victim bearing some blame so even in plain usage it has that baggage now. Is there another word or can it be reclaimed in it’s proper meaning? It’s now part of a culture determined by the perpetrators who are corrupting language to absolve their responsibility both direct and indirect. To some extent I guess it’s how a ruling class operates, blame & guilt displaced, it never does wrong and misfortune is brought upon by the individual lacking some quality those who are not a victim have.

Better make sure the next one is a Latino.
And/or gay.

Here’s the biggie- poor.

John Bolton made this exact point during the evening (also on the BBC).
Something along the lines of:
“So can we assume that all the accusations of the USA being racist will end now?”
It came across as:
“so will all you ‘liberals’ stop badgering us now?”
Cunt.

Yes, if we make the next President a poor person, we will end poverty.
This idea just gets better and better. Why has it taken so long to figure this out.

Who would have thought John Bolton would say something offensive and stupid, after all they keep having him on telly so they must not expect that…yeah fire Ross & Brand, they’re really offensive.
I don’t know and it was there all along, silly us.
Maybe also if we elect someone with AIDS it will cure them, or cancer, …the blind will see, the deaf shall hear, the crippled shall walk! It’s magic!

Thanks for attacking the non-word “victimhood.” Someday, I will need to rant on my blog on how incredibly stupid and dishonest it is.
8 November, 2008 at 5:33 pm
Yes it’s a sneaky language trick by the dominant group, get your rant on!
