International Women’s Day

I went to the .com site and saw all the corporate sponsorship, y’know corporations who routinely pay women less than men and who profit from a globally iniquitous system into which inequality is built in. Maybe it is being turned into international business women’s day, hmmm. Still let’s not let them hijack things, try this instead, although it seems a bit rubbish that half the world’s human population get a day, surely they should get every day.

Anyways, women bloggers who are most excellent and are in my regular reads, let’s celebrate them today-

Ann @ People’s Geography

Anok @ Identity Check

Larisa @ At Largely

Lucie @ Happy Famous Artists

Naj @ Neo Resistance

And also the essential Amy Goodman @ Democracy Now! The indispensable Naomi Klein. The Rachels- from London and the Maddow! The great work of Women’s Field. A shout out to Thorne who survived a terrible loss. The Lozmeister. And all the women of my family (6!), even the really annoying ones. If you’re a personage of the female persuasion and think you would feel at home in my blogroll please let me know!

Thanks Rick for this thoughtful post. I also appreciate Larisa and Naj and will take the opportunity to check out Anok and Lucie’s sites too.

Interestingly enough, the History Channel (Indian) celebrated IWD with programmes on:
    Grace Kelly
    Jackie Kennedy/Onassis
    Anne Frank
    and
    Princess Diana

It is especially interesting since the region has had 8 elected heads of government who were women:
Sirimavo Bandaranaike (World’s first) (Sri Lanka)
    Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge (Sri Lanka)
    Indira Gandhi (World’s second) (India)
    Benazir Bhutto (Pakistan)
    Khalida Zia (Bangla Desh)
    Sheik Hasina (Bangla Desh).

Hey Ann, nice to see you, I trust for International Women’s Day the UN/G8 baked you a cake or something, seems the least they could do as equality seemed to be secondary to a vague ‘Hurray for ladies’ type distraction from real issues. And that way they could celebrate Marie Antoinette which seems the sort of white rich conservative woman they like as pointed out by Vinod.
Hey Vinod, thanks for coming by and commenting and what a brilliant point that is, they went for non controversial western women icons while ignoring real achievement by regional women. A very poor showing of western white biased cultural imperialism and blindness.
Then again that is the History channel, probably pained them to spend a day not showing documentaries about the third reich! Or do they at least show some local specific stuff on the Indian channel sometimes?
