You may remember a few weeks back an Iranian couple were sentenced to be stoned to death and after some publicity the stoning was cancelled. Well it turns out they simply waited until no-one was watching, they stoned the man Jafar Kiani to death thursday 5th July. His partner Mokarrameh Ebrahimi is now awaiting the same fate unless another wave of attention forces them to stop. So full details and contact details on Women’s field here.
And details for UK and US contacts here:-
Email to: info@iran-embassy.org.uk
Ambassador Rasoul Movahedian,
Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran

iran@un.intThere is not an Iranian embassy in the US, but the Pakistan embassy handles their interests so you could email to ask for clemency to this address-

If this gets the attention the stoning video of Du’a Khalil Aswad got, if you were disgusted at that, if you read about it or read Joss Whedon’s article, well now you can actually do something this time, not just be revolted after the fact.

Just send an email Eric.

Thanks for posting this on my site. I’m not quite sure what Eric is trying to achieve with that remark.

It’s appalling, obviously, inhuman. But why would the IRI listen to me? If the notionally democratic government which notionally represents me won’t let the opinion people like me – loads of us – prevent them from appalling inhuman crimes, then why would a faraway dictatorial theocracy?
10 July, 2007 at 11:29 pm
A good question, and it mostly comes down to public image and how that is used to manipulate opinion. By drawing attention to this it gives IRI the opportunity to score a PR victory -stop the stoning (which appears to be more about one judge’s ego than anything else). Certainly the sailors incident showed Ahmadinejad is quite a modern pol who likes his spin. Absent of attention there is no value in them halting the execution and then afterwards it can then be used as fuel for those wanting conflict. A lose lose. I don’t think there would be any chance if this were such a huge crime as the Iraq war, but it is one person. Sometimes the realpolitik climate can be in such a state that it favours a humanitarian gesture, I think this is such a case. Although I am, I suppose, nervous because of the use these kinds of situations are put to by warmongers. But I think it would be wrong to repress honest reactions and disgust lest they be misused, it is something I think about a lot. And in fact there is a fake group backed by neo-cons that profess to be for a democratic Iran. But it’s only about accentuating the IRI regimes injustices to justify an attack.
So I think, yes, a lot of the time you are banging your head against a wall (especially in our fake democracy) but the political stage can sometimes be -manipulated to be- favourable to small victories of humanity.

Thanks for posting this. I mentioned in my email that such a stoning would remind the world of how similar the Iranian government can be to Christian religious extremists.

Arrrggghhh! Shit, Rick!! I’m off to do my email and clip and post thing with this. I have to tell you though… sometimes I think this shit is killing me. If you saw my Peace Post today, you know what I mean. The empathy I feel for thousands upon hundred thousands being tortured, killed, starving… I mostly somehow, while doing what I can, manage to hold back the tears and despair. The numbers are so huge, ya know?? Then I get an email from you about one man stoned to death, and one woman we might be able to save, and I can hardly see to type I’m fucking bawling so hard! I mean, it’s so stupid, but I feel like I fucking know them!? What’s up with that?
Bleaaaach. I’m so sick. But I can’t help but hope. Hope against all hope that one life could make a difference.
Oh, Goddess…
Thanks for the heads up.

Sorry Thorne, it’s also important you are fit to fight another day so do what you can and ignore what you need to. If things get too much take some time away and recharge, I know I need to at times. There are lots of people on this now so our hand is played, any news I will update. We only fail if we don’t try.

Hello Gul, Yeah I understand your strong feelings though I’d find it best if stoning simply was stopped and participants were brought to court. In the particular case of Du’a Khalil Aswad I think all the participants should be tried for murder openly and with great attention. Because a message needs to be sent out, this is a crime, this is wrong, you do not do this. Stoning is over.

Well Iranians are generally against the stonings
http://www.meydaan.com/English/
but authoritarian rulers continue to use them which is shameful. I do hope they pay for their act, but I can’t agree with torturing them in revenge. Justice should not be revenge, although one to one if I met one of those guys boasting about it, I’d take him down.

Thanks for stopping by Gul and writing passionately, she will be remembered and the best commemoration will hopefully be stoning being stopped. May Du’a Khalil Aswad rest in peace.
